2015 U.S. News Top Legal Schools in the Country

The U.S. News law school rankings consider factors like average GPA and LSAT scores, location, tuition, and number of students.  Each year, law schools and prospective law students alike use the U.S. News rankings to analyze and promote law school programs.

This year, the U.S. News and World Report reports that a number of schools are tied, particularly within the top 20.  In the 2015 rankings, Yale University tops the list, followed by Harvard and Stanford.  Yale’s tuition, at $54,650 per year, is slightly higher than either Harvard or Stanford, but the school enrolls fewer than half the students Harvard does, resulting in a lower professor-student ratio.

Columbia University in New York City and the University of Chicago tied for fourth place.  The University of Chicago’s total class size rivals that of Yale; Columbia enrolls approximately twice as many students.

Rounding out the top ten law schools in the 2015 rankings were:

  • New York University, New York, NY
  • University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA
  • University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA
  • University of California – Berkeley, Berkeley, CA
  • Duke University, Durham, NC (tied with the University of Michigan)
  • University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI (tied with Duke)

Additional “ties” between top law schools also punctuate the top 20 for 2015.  These include a tie for 13th place between Cornell University in Ithaca, NY and Georgetown University in Washington, DC.  The University of California – Los Angeles and Vanderbilt University of Nashville, Tennessee are tied for 16th place.  Rounding out the top 20 is a tie between George Washington University in Washington, DC and the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities in Minneapolis, MN.  The University of Minnesota offers one of the lowest in-state tuition costs on the list: at $40,058 per year for in-state students, its costs are beaten only by in-state tuition at #15, the University of Texas – Austin at $33,162 per year.

Also in the top 20 are Northwestern University (Chicago, IL), University of Texas – Austin (Austin, TX), Washington University in St. Louis (St. Louis, MO), and Emory University (Atlanta, GA).
